COMEX Metals Analysis: Gold and silver remain below key averages as copper stabilises

By Finoways Research Team · Published 19 Oct 2026, 07:30 UAE · Gold (GC), Silver (SI), Copper (HG)

Gold and silver remain below their 20-day and 50-day moving averages, although both posted gains on 19 October. Copper is holding above both averages, with its 14-day RSI, a momentum gauge, near the neutral 50 level. Gold is close to its 20-day average, while silver remains weaker after a 12.15% 20-day decline. The scheduled US releases are low-impact, but short-term volatility can increase if results differ from expectations.

Technical analysis

Gold (GC)

Bearish4,199.8

Gold is below its 20-day average at 4204.9 and well below its 50-day average at 4370.4, while remaining in the lower half of its 20-day range from 4091.2 to 4414.1.

Resistance4,204.9 | 4,211.8

Gold closed at 4199.8 after rising 0.45% on the day, putting it just below the 20-day average at 4204.9. The close is above the pivot at 4189.7, while the 14-day RSI is 45.6, indicating momentum is below the neutral midpoint but not at an extreme.

The broader structure remains soft because price is below the 50-day average at 4370.4 and is down 4.2% over 20 days. The recent low at 4176 and pivot support at 4189.7 are the first levels to monitor. A move through 4204.9 would bring the pivot resistance at 4211.8 into focus, while the 20-day low at 4091.2 marks the wider range floor.

Bullish scenarioIf Gold holds above 4189.7 and moves through 4204.9, attention could turn to 4211.8 while momentum is monitored for improvement from its 45.6 RSI.
Bearish scenarioIf Gold falls below 4189.7 and then 4176, the 20-day low at 4091.2 becomes the next downside reference.

Silver (SI)

Bearish57.83

Silver is below its 20-day average at 60.44 and 50-day average at 63.79, near the lower end of its 20-day range between 55.5 and 66.22.

Silver closed at 57.83, up 1.46% on the day, but remains down 3.85% over five days and 12.15% over 20 days. Its 14-day RSI is 39.62, showing weak momentum, while the close remains below the 20-day average at 60.44 and the 50-day average at 63.79.

The pivot cluster is concentrated around 57.00, making that level an important near-term reference. A sustained hold above it could keep the recent rebound in focus, with the 20-day exponential average at 60.07 and the 20-day average at 60.44 as overhead tests. A break below 57.00 would leave the 20-day and 60-day lows at 55.5 as the main range support.

Bullish scenarioIf Silver holds above 57.00 and recovers through 60.07, the 20-day average at 60.44 would be the next level to monitor.
Bearish scenarioIf Silver loses 57.00, attention could shift toward the 55.5 20-day and 60-day lows.

Copper (HG)

Bullish6.623

Copper is above its 20-day average at 6.604 and 50-day average at 6.580, although it remains below its 20-day and 60-day high at 6.830.

Support6.604 | 6.581

Copper closed at 6.623 after gaining 1.41% on the day. The close is above the 20-day average at 6.604, the 50-day average at 6.580 and the 20-day exponential average at 6.589. Its 14-day RSI is 52.42, slightly above the neutral midpoint, while the five-day change remains negative at 1.13%.

The pivot at 6.556 and pivot resistance at 6.581 are below the current close, so the 20-day average at 6.604 is the first nearby support reference. A move above 6.632, the second pivot resistance, would place the 20-day and 60-day high at 6.830 back on the range map. Failure to hold 6.581 would weaken the short-term structure and expose the pivot at 6.556.

Bullish scenarioIf Copper holds above 6.604 and clears 6.632, the 6.830 20-day and 60-day high becomes the next major range reference.
Bearish scenarioIf Copper slips below 6.581 and then 6.556, the moving-average support structure would weaken and 6.506 would become a lower pivot reference.

The next scheduled US releases are all marked low impact, so their immediate effect on COMEX metals may be limited. The NAHB Housing Market Index is due Monday at 18:00 UAE, with a forecast of 31 versus 32 previously.

  • Tuesday at 16:15 UAE: ADP Weekly Employment Change, with a previous reading of 24.8K and no forecast shown.
  • Tuesday at 16:30 UAE: Building Permits, forecast at 1.39M versus 1.39M previously, and Housing Starts, forecast at 1.30M versus 1.28M previously.
  • Tuesday at 18:00 UAE: Pending Home Sales m/m, forecast at -0.4% versus 0.3% previously.

Gold and silver can react to changes in the broader US economic outlook, while copper can also respond to shifts in growth expectations. Because these releases are low impact, price reaction may remain focused on the stated pivots and recent highs and lows unless the results differ materially from expectations.

Algo insight: how a rules-based system treats today

A rules-based approach would treat the metals differently: Gold and Silver remain below key averages, while Copper is above them. The 14-day ATR, a measure of typical daily price movement, is 70.1 for Gold, 1.24 for Silver and 0.078 for Copper. Any risk-control distance would need to account for these different volatility scales rather than use one fixed distance across all instruments.

Position sizing can be reduced when ATR is large relative to the account risk limit, and increased volatility can justify wider invalidation distances only if the predefined risk remains unchanged. The approach would monitor Gold around 4189.7 and 4204.9, Silver around 57.00 and 60.07, and Copper around 6.604 and 6.632.

With low-impact releases scheduled at 16:15, 16:30 and 18:00 UAE on Tuesday, a rules-based process can avoid initiating new exposure immediately around the release windows if its rules require a volatility buffer. Session timing and confirmation after the announcement can help distinguish a temporary move from a break of the established levels.
